Gin Wigmore

What an awesome way to start December, by attending a Gin Wigmore gig at the East Brunswick Hotel. The gig, joined by The Cardinals was to launch her debut album Holy Smoke. Gin, originally from Auckland, New Zealand, has a style and energy of her own. Her raspy and heartfelt lyrics were penned after a previous relationship meltdown, are a reflection of the raw emotions she felt at the time without being overly dramatic. It is a delicate balance of soul, blues and fun rocking tunes that sets her music apart from the rest of the crowd. Big things are in store for Gin so long as she keeps on doing what she's doing while still having fun!

Again, I was there with my camera to capture the action on stage. I managed to get there early enough this time to get a spot up front. The lighting was more of a challenge this time round, the lighting guy seemed to have a liking for yellow and green. Not all that ideal for photography work, however I dealt with it. The following is a collection of photos I took. Enjoy!

Dan Sultan - Album Launch

It's a been a little while since I've updated my blog, so what better way to do so than with some of my photography work! On Saturday 21st November, I went to the Dan Sultan Album Lauch gig at The Espy (The Esplanade Hotel) in St Kilda. I'd heard so much about Dan and how awesome his brand of music was, I wasn't disappointed! A fusion of soul, funk, country and rock is the best way to describe it. Dan has an on stage presence and demeanor not to dissimilar to Johnny Cash, a complement of the highest regard. The girls love him and the guys want to be him. I'll definitely try to get to another one of his gigs soon. My only downside to the night was that I got there late because I was at work till 11pm (the gig started at 11pm) and I didn't get there till around 12am! I took my camera along to capture some of the night. It is my first attempt at gig photography and not a single shot using the flash. It's a bit of a challenge and takes a bit of playing around with until you find a setting suitable to the moment. The first few photos are evident of that. Another part of the challenge is dealing with being knocked around by the other patrons. I was back a bit further from the stage than I would have liked, but that said I wouldn't have got some of the shots I did! All in all, a good first effort at gig photography!

Poster-zine

So I had a brainwave while in the shower this morning. Strange how these things happen, I wasn't even thinking about anything design related. It's amazing my brain was switched on pre-coffee fix, the cogs usually clunk quite a bit that time of the day! Anyway, the brainwave I had was to do with making my own sort of publication, a design / arts magazine of sorts. Not a magazine in a traditional sense, but a folded poster. It's purely an artistic exercise and could be a rather expensive one but fun none the less, especially if I could collaborate with a few others. I'm sure something like this has been done before but I can't remember anything specifically.

I took an A4 piece of paper and made a mock-up of the poster-zine. Ideally this would be done in A1 or A2 format. It would be double sided too.

This photo gives a better idea of how it's folded out. You could even play around with optical illusions with the folds.

Poster-zine unfolded.

I'll start putting together some conceptual ideas for the Poster-zine and post them up soon. If you want to collaborate with me on the Poster-zine, let me know.
